Winter Lawn Care

No one really wants to be out in the cold, but proper winter lawn care is a must. Hopefully
you have done completed all of the necessary fall care required before you begin any
more seasonal work. The information provided here is for most regions and if you have
any specific questions, you can always ask your local lawn care specialist.

Of course, you can't mow while there is two feet of snow on your yard, so for those who
live in these areas you can relax until spring. For everyone else, you still have some
winter lawn care to do. Keep in mind that if your region temperatures don't change, your
maintenance won't drastically change like other areas do.

For those whose temperatures do begin to drop and the growth of your lawn really slows
down, there are some tasks that you should perform to keep your yard healthy even
through the winter season. Winter is a time for hibernation which many plants need; not
only is it a time to recover from the past year but to get ready for the next. You don't have
to spend hours with winter lawn care, but enough to ensure a healthy lawn.

Give your lawn one last cut which should be a little lower than you would normally. This
last cut will give your grass enough length to maintain nutrients it requires. A shorter cut
will also help with the next step, fertilization.

Fertilization is the next step and this will be the last time before next spring arrives. There
are plenty of winter fertilizers, organic too, at your local home improvement store that you
can choose from. You can also make your own, but this is up to you.

Aerating your lawn is also very helpful. This will not only help to get oxygen into the
ground, but it allows the fertilizer to get deeper into the soil where the roots of your lawn
are. This doesn't take very long, and the process is very simple; you may be able to rent
an aerator from your local home improvement store.

Winter lawn care also involves a thorough clean up of the yard. Everything should be off
the grass if at all possible. Swing sets and above ground pools can't be moved, but if it
can be moved then move it to the shed for the winter. Keeping items off the grass will
ensure that it won't die. In the summer if something is left on the grass, the grass can
quickly recover; in the winter, the opposite occurs and you will probably have to reseed
in the spring.

The purpose of caring for your lawn in the winter is to ensure a beautiful
green lawn in the
spring. It's basically prep work; so the more you do now, the less you will have to do later.
Of course, you can also think of it as the final care required for that past year. You want
to clean up the old and prepare for the new.

Don't turn your lawn care into work, because it's not; besides you did most of it earlier
that fall. The necessary winter lawn care is easy, simple and when spring arrives you will
have a great start to a beautiful lawn.
